Local Schools

One of the most important choices a parent can make for their child is where they will attend school. It is also an important factor to consider when choosing your future home. The vast amount of information available, both online and in print, for parents to sift through when making this decision can be daunting. What is important? What sources are valid? What choices do you have as a parent in the school your child attends? What do all the acronyms and statistics mean? Below are some tips and tricks to help you navigate this choice and feel great about your child’s new school!

Things to consider when making your choice:

  • School Size- is it similar to the school your child is leaving and are there other options in the district?
  • Types of schools the district offers- traditional, charters, magnet schools, academies etc.
  • State and federal accountability measures- API (Academic Performance Index) and AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress)

Tips and Tricks

  1. Parents do have a choice in where their students go to school, especially with the variety of schools out there today. Don’t just go choose the school you live closest to.
  2. Go directly to the district website for the area you are looking to live in. From there you can access all of the information you need to start your search. District websites have links to schools, accountability information and will give you the “big picture” of the district and options open to you as a parent.
  3. Be wary of school rating sites, or at least take the information with a grain of salt. Many sites are unmoderated and the posts can be biased in both directions.
  4. Look at the SARC (School Accountability Report Card) for excellent information about potential schools. This resource gives an “at a glance” write up of the school.
  5. Go visit! Call the school office and make an appointment with a counselor to learn more about the school. Going to the school gives you a great feel for the environment.

Once you decide on a school you absolutely want your child to attend be sure to communicate that to your Green Real Estate Consultant as soon as you reach that decision so your consultant can tailor your home search to ensure your new home is within the school’s boundary.
