There is so much information out there about how to green your home now that it can be truly overwhelming. So to save you some time we have compiled a list of our favorite resources:

Energy Efficiency and Green Tips

www.flexyourpower.org – Calculate your carbon footprint, learn to seal air leaks and make your home cheaper to operate – Flex Your Power is a one stop green solution and one of the most informative sites on the web!

http://green.car.org – This is the California Association of Realtors (C.A.R.) green website. As a founding member of the C.A.R. Green Real Estate Task Force I helped spur the development of this site and contributed to it’s direction and content. It is full of great information for the general public on green real estate and greening your home and great information for Realtors too.

www.energystar.gov – A great resource for energy star appliances and greening your home tips. Check out their Energy Star Home Advisor for tips on greening your next project.

Eco Cool Remodel Tool – This is a fun interactive tool that lets you click on a room of a virtual home and get tips on how to green that room.

Water Efficiency

www.waterwiser.org – 70% of the planet is water, of that 70% only 1% is safe to drink and of that 1% we waste an incredible amount on water leaks, inefficient irrigation and high water use appliances. On top of that 20% of California’s electricity goes into the moving and pumping of water so if you save water, you also save the power that would have gone into getting that water to you.  Water conservation is double bang for your back. If you live in Placerville you have experienced an over 40% rise in the cost of your water over the last 2 years. Go to water wiser for great tips on how you can lower your monthly water bills.

www.epa.gov/owm/water-efficiency – Again saving water is a great way to save both energy and water. Check out this very helpful site by the EPA.

Rainwater Catchment – Again 70% of the planet is water and only 1% is still drinkable and every time we flush the toilet 1.6 gallons of pure clean drinking water goes down the drain to get rid of our waste. Go to this great site by the city of Portland to find out how you can flush the toilets and water the gardens with free rain water caught on your own roof!

Indoor Air Quality

EPA Indoor Air Quality – Indoor air pollutants are 2 – 5 times higher than outside air, we spend over 90% of our time indoors, 6 out of 10 homes are “sick” due to poor indoor air quality and the perevalence of asthma has doubled since 1976  to 20 million people, including 6.3 million children and growing. Now is the time to learn what’s in the building materials in your home and how to mitigate their effects. This EPA site has great resources to teach you how to improve your indoor air quality and make your home healthier.

www.healthhouse.org – This great site by the American Lung Association teaches you everything you need to know to build a home with healthy indoor air quality.

Fun Green Info and Other Blogs

www.treehugger.com – Hate the name love the info. Although the name of this blog conjures up all the images that we don’t want associated with the green building movement it is a prolific blog with incredible information on all things green, environmental and healthy lifestyle. It also does a fair number of posts on fun green tech gadgets so if you are a green techy person this blog is for you.
